GLOBAL PARTICIPATION : UN PEACEKEEPING (UNMISS) : More Than 1,000 Indian Peacekeepers Serving with UN Mission in South Sudan Awarded Medals for Outstanding Work

The work includes protecting civilians, performing engineering assignments and providing health services to humans and animals, a news report posted on the UNMISS website said.

More than 1,100 Indian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded UN medals, honouring them for their exceptional service in the strife-torn East African country.

The UNMISS “peacekeepers don’t ‘just’ protect civilians. Some 1,160 troops from #India in #SouthSudan also rehabilitate roads, build the capacity of local communities and give medical treatment to humans & animals. For that they deserve @UN medals,” the UNMISS said in a tweet on Thursday.

The 1,160 Indian peacekeepers currently serving in Upper Nile State were honoured with UN medals “for their outstanding and multifaceted work”, including protecting civilians, performing engineering assignments and providing health services to humans and animals, a news report posted on the UNMISS website said.

INDIA RECORDS : PATENT FOR PHARMACEUTICALS : CET Obtains Patent for Compound with Anti-Cancer Properties

The compound has been derived from the medicinal plant Koduveli.

The College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) has bagged a patent for inventing a pharmaceutical agent that is expected to have immense potential in cancer treatment.

The newly synthesised compound, 3-([4-Chloro-3(Trifluoromethyl) Phenyl] Amino)-5-Hydroxy-2-Methyl-1,4-Dihydronapthalene-1,4-Dione, was the result of the five-year long research jointly undertaken by Shyni P. Laila and Arunkumar B.

The researchers were guided by Annette Fernandez, the former head of the Department of Chemistry at CET who had retired as Principal of the Government College of Arts and Science, Pathirippala, in Palakkad few years ago.

They pointed out the pharmaceutical agent is a fluoro derivative (a derivate compound obtained by reaction with a fluoro-compound) which was derived by structural modification of a hydroxyquinone, Plumbagin, that was isolated from the roots of Plumbago zeylanica, a medicinal plant known as Koduveli in local parlance.

The market heavyweight stock jumped 1.85 per cent to its record high of Rs 2,827.10 on the BSE. Following the gain in the share price, the company’s market valuation jumped to Rs 19,12,814 crore in morning trade on the BSE.

GLOBAL CONTRACTS – INDIA TO THE WORLD: ASIA : MEDICINE & SCIENCE : Biocon Biologics Bags $90-mn Contract from Malaysian Government to Supply Human Insulin

Biocon Biologics Insugen formulations will be available to all Ministry of Health hospitals, district health offices, and health clinics.

Biocon Biologics Limited (BBL), a subsidiary of Biocon on Tuesday said it has bagged a three-year contract valued at $90 million from the Malaysian government for the supply of recombinant human insulin brand Insugen.

Biocon Sdn Bhd., a subsidiary of Biocon Biologics, will manufacture and supply its range of insulins to its partner Duopharma Marketing Sdn. Bhd. (DMktg), a subsidiary of Duopharma Biotech, a pharma & biotech firm in Malaysia.

Biocon Biologics’ Insugen formulations will be available to patients at all Ministry of Health hospitals, district health offices, and health clinics, as per an official statement.

INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION : EUROPE : ARTS & CULTURE : Deepika Padukone to be part of 75th edition 2022 Cannes Film Festival Jury

French actor Vincent Lindon will be heading the jury at the 75th edition of the coveted festival, which will run from May 17 to 28.

Actor Deepika Padukone will be a part of the competition jury at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, the organisers said.

Padukone, 36, was earlier the chairperson of Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival for two years.

She found fame with her 2007 film “Om Shanti Om”, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, and later featured in several blockbuster and critically-acclaimed movies like “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”, “Chennai Express”, “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela”, “Bajirao Mastani”, “Padmaavat” and “Piku”.

The actor, who was most recently seen in Shakun Batra’s “Gehraiyaan”, made her Hollywood debut with the 2017 actioner “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage”, fronted by Vin Diesel.

INDIA RECORDS : COLONIAL HISTORY : Arunachal Pradesh Villagers Build ‘Misum-Miyang Kumsung Museum’ on Century-Old Battleground of Anglo-Abor Wars

The Museum is located near spot where British officer was killed during the Anglo-Abor War of 1911-12

The people of a village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang district have constructed an “eco-friendly” museum near a spot where warriors of the Adi community killed a British officer during a war in 1911-12.

The Adi people inhabiting large swathes of central Arunachal Pradesh had resisted colonial expansion several times between 1858 and 1912. These are called the Anglo-Abor Wars.

The Misum-Miyang Kumsung, meaning “ancient artefacts museum,” has been set up at Komsing village, about 12km from district headquarters Pangin. The spot is near where the Adi warriors had killed Noel Williamson, the British political officer during the last of the wars in 1911-12.

Locally known as the Poju Mimak, the war was fought from October 6, 1911, to January 11, 1912. It is considered one of the most decisive Anglo-Abor wars in the history of the freedom movement in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sachin won a 67kg bronze in the Greco-Roman category of the ongoing Asian Championships in Mongolia on Wednesday.

A reluctant wrestler, Sachin Sehrawat, was a big MS Dhoni fan and wanted to be a successful wicketkeeper-batter like him. He even joined a cricket academy in Faridkot (Punjab) to pursue his dream. His father Virender Singh, who was with the BSF and posted at Faridkot then, however, wanted his son to follow some individual sports.

Sachin was unrelenting but eventually decided to switch to wrestling after coaches at his academy didn’t give him enough opportunities with the bat during training. “My father suggested to take up wrestling. So I joined Baba Farid Kushti Akhara in Faridkot in 2012,” Sachin, 25, told The New Indian Express from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia after winning his first international medal, a 67kg bronze in the Greco-Roman category of the ongoing Asian Championships on Wednesday.

Punjab’s Vijayveer Sidhu won the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol title while Haryana’s Rhythm Sangwan cliched gold in both the women’s and junior section of the same event on day six of the National Selection Trial 3 and 4 here on Wednesday.

Vijayveer fought off a spirited challenge from India internationals Anish Bhanwala and Adarsh Singh to win the gold with 32 hits to his name at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range.

GLOBAL EXCELLENCE : UAE RECORDS : Indian Doctor Dr Zainul Aabideen Performs 1st Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant in UAE

A Indian Malayali doctor in Abu Dhabi wrote himself into record books when he performed the first pediatric stem cell bone marrow transplant in the UAE.

Dr Zainul Aabideen, a native of Kannur in Kerala, presently Head of the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Burjeel Medical City successfully performed the advanced allogeneic procedure on a five-year-old girl from Uganda with sickle cell disease.

Billed as the first such surgery done in the UAE, the patient’s 10-year-old sister donated her bone marrow for the transplant treatment at Burjeel Medical City, a flagship hospital of VPS Healthcare.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder, which results in an abnormality in the hemoglobin found in red blood cells, causing them to become sickle-shaped and leading to several complications including anemia, swelling in the hands and feet, frequent pain, acute chest syndrome, and sometimes stroke.

Prior to the treatment, the child has been regularly admitted to the hospital due to complications arising from her disease since birth.
