RECORDS, MEDICINE : U.P. Doctor sets Record with 107 Eye Surgeries in 16 hours

Dr S.P. Singh, Director of the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Principal of the MLN Medical College (MLNMC), Prayagraj, has set a new record by conducting 107 phacoemulsification surgeries with intraocular lens (IOL) implant free of cost within a span of 16-and-a-half-hours.

“The surgeries were performed between 6 a.m and 10.30 p.m. continuously for 16-and-a-half hours on February 25.

Earlier, then Brigadier (Dr) J.K.S Parihar of the Army Hospital Research and Referral in New Delhi, had performed 34 phacoemulsification surgeries in October 2011 in eastern Ladakh and made a place for himself in the Limca Book of Records.

On March 5, 2001, Singh had set a record, which was registered in the Limca Book of Records, by performing 81 operations in 11 hours at one go

INTERNATIONAL : ‘India is Natural leader of Quad in Indo-Pacific region,’ says Australian High Commissioner

India is clearly the natural leader in the region in terms of the vision the Quad signs up to in the Indo-Pacific region, and the multi-nation defence exercise, MILAN, held in Vishakapatnam demonstrates the cooperation across countries in the Indo-Pacific, Australian High Commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell said.

“The exercise Milan where 14 countries, including Australia, took part, demonstrates the co-operation across countries in the Indo-Pacific to secure a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

In terms of the vision the Quad signs up to with relation to the Indo-Pacific, India is clearly the natural leader in the region.

SCIENCE : Scientists of IISc, India and QBI, Australia have devised new Math Model to predict Coronavirus Vaccine Efficacy

A mathematical model that predicts how antibodies made by COVID-19 vaccines protect against symptomatic infections has been developed by scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) in Australia.

A paper about the study was published in Nature Computational Science.

Nikhat Zareen and Nitu, Golden Girls of Indian Boxing Win Gold at 73rd Strandja, Sofia

Indian boxers Nikhat Zareen (52kg) and Nitu (48kg) struck gold at the 73rd Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. ​​

The Hyderabad-based Zareen, who is a multiple-time national medallist, had won a gold medal at the Strandja Memorial’s 2019 edition as well. With another one added to her kitty this time, she became the first Indian boxer to claim two gold medals at the tournament.
